Who this is for

Cabling is the one part of your infrastructure you can't easily redo later — worth getting right the first time.

You probably need this if…

  • You're fitting out a new office, floor or building.
  • You're relocating or expanding into additional space.
  • Existing cabling can't support the switch speeds you need now.
  • Nobody has an accurate record of what's actually installed or where it runs.
  • You're building out a new data centre or server room.
  • A client or auditor wants certified cabling test reports you don't have.

Where it applies

New officesData centresFactoriesHospitalsHospitalityEducational campuses

Probably not the right fit when…

  • A single new camera or access point needing one extra cable run — not a structured cabling project.
  • An existing certified cabling plant that just needs a handful of additional drops.

Technical overview

Cabling outlives almost every active device placed on top of it, so it's specified for ten years or more. We cover the full gamut — campus and office fit-outs, remote and branch sites, data centre and server rooms — on one structured cabling and fibre backbone standard, certified and documented end to end.

Design principles

  • Design pathways, telecommunications rooms and outlet locations before installation begins.
  • Keep permanent-link and channel lengths within the limits of the selected cabling standard and application.
  • Select OS2 or OM4 fibre according to distance, transceiver compatibility, bandwidth and upgrade strategy.
  • Certify installed links, document identifiers at both ends and maintain applicable bend-radius, separation and firestopping requirements.

Specification baseline

AspectSpecificationWhy it matters
Horizontal copperUse Cat6A where 10GBASE-T support and lifecycle requirements justify itCat6A supports 10GBASE-T over a compliant channel up to 100 m.
Channel lengthUp to 100 m for a compliant balanced twisted-pair channel, typically a 90 m permanent link plus equipment cords within the channel allowanceThe channel limit includes all applicable cabling and connection components.
Backbone fibreOS2 for longer campus runs; OM4 where supported multimode applications are appropriateFibre choice affects optical reach, transceiver selection and upgrade options.
PathwaysProvide fill allowance, accessible routes, bend-radius control and appropriate service separationCorrectly sized pathways reduce installation risk and simplify additions.
IdentificationApply a consistent TIA-606-aligned scheme to rooms, racks, panels, cables and outletsTraceable identifiers speed troubleshooting and change management.
TestingCertify copper links to the selected category and test fibre loss and other required parametersAcceptance measurements establish an objective installation baseline.

Key design decisions

Backbone fibre

OS2 single-mode

Campus distances, longer reach or single-mode migration flexibility are priorities.

OM4 multimode

Shorter building or data-centre links and compatible short-reach optics are appropriate.

Horizontal category

Cat6

Application bandwidth and lifecycle requirements do not justify Cat6A.

Cat6A

10GBASE-T or longer-term horizontal cabling flexibility is required.

Sizing & calculations

A compliant balanced-cabling channel must not exceed 100 m where the applicable standard defines that maximum.

A 90 m permanent link with 10 m of compliant equipment cords reaches the nominal 100 m channel limit.

Outlet count = identified endpoint outlets plus planned growth outlets, adjusted for workstation density and spare capacity.

120 planned outlets plus 20% growth gives 144 outlets before rounding to practical panel and rack capacities.

Rack capacity must accommodate patch panels, cable management, active equipment, bend-radius requirements and planned additions.

96 installed copper runs require at least two 48-port panels, before any additional expansion allowance.
